Most type is designed to disappear. Tonne is designed to arrive.
THE FACE
Tonne is a display grotesk engineered like a load-bearing wall. Every curve was drawn at 900 first, then relieved of weight one hundred grams at a time until only the hairline skeleton remained. That order matters: most faces get bolder by inflation. Tonne gets lighter by subtraction, so even at 100 it stands like something heavy used to be there.
THE AXES
Two axes, no gimmicks. Weight runs 100 to 900 across a true design space, not an interpolation guess. Width runs 50 to 150, from a condensed that fits four extra characters per column to an extended that fills a billboard with three words. Eighteen named styles ship as anchors; the space between them is yours.
THE FOUNDRY
MASS is an independent foundry that publishes few faces, slowly. We believe a typeface is industrial equipment: it should survive being dropped, scaled, squeezed and inverted without complaint. Tonne spent thirty-one months in the shop. It is our first release and the reason the foundry exists.
